Statements by Rabbis for Human RightsRabbis for Human Rights (RHR) is the only organization in Israel today concerned specifically with giving voice to the Jewish religious tradition of human rights. RHR has no affiliation with any political party or ideology. Founded in 1988, its membership today includes over one hundred ordained rabbis and rabbinical students. Its members are Israeli citizens. RHR is the only Israeli rabbinical organization comprised of Reform, Orthodox, Conservative, Reconstructionist and Renewal rabbis and students. Among its members are rabbis in national leadership positions, as well as educators and congregational rabbis capable of influencing change from the grass roots. Rabbis for Human Rights has been endorsed by the Conservative, Reform, and Reconstuctionist rabbinical organizations in North America. In 1993 RHR received "The Speaker of the Knesset's Award for the Quality of Life in the Field of Enhancing the Rule of Law and Democratic Values, Protecting Human Rights, and Encouraging Tolerance and Mutual Respect." Its website is www.rhr.israel.net. The following statements have been selected from this website. Statement on the Current Crisis We remain deeply committed to supporting human rights and to seeking reconciliation with our Palestinian neighbors, and we believe that a just peace can and must be pursued. We Israelis must admit some responsibility for our actions that helped fuel this cycle of violence. Refusal to do so only leads to acquiescence in the face of ongoing human rights violations, provoking more resentment among Palestinians. Israel has Created a Conflict of Rights The placement of many Israeli settlements in the middle of Palestinian olive groves has created a conflict between the Israeli right to security and the Palestinian rights of both security and access to their land. On personal, national and cosmic levels an act, which seems insignificant at the time, may be the one that tips the scales one way or the other. This both gives us hope and puts a great deal of responsibility on our shoulders. Holding Israel to the Highest Moral Standard The perception of Judaism and the image of the Jew throughout the world are largely determined by what Israel does. For Jews to remain silent is to jeopardize the legitimacy of the Jewish State in the eyes of the world, and to put Israel's very existence at risk. A program of weekly study and volunteer fieldwork for Israeli University students that promotes Jewish values in defense of human rights. This is a description of a sample evening of study in the Yeshiva. One Village under Three Governments The situation between the two nations is asymmetric, and it is premature to talk about "peace" when the principles of inequality and discrimination continue to dominate the Israeli mentality.
