Is Bush Working for Osama?Robert Traer An American attack on Iraq will delight Osama bin Laden. What better way to get rid of Saddam Hussein (who Osama calls an infidel) and to increase Islamic militancy! And after the war the American occupation of Iraq will verify Osama's claim that America is only interested in exploiting the wealth of Muslim countries and in suppressing their God-given right to govern themselves by Islamic law. Osama bin Laden made this clear in his recent statement identifying the American led coalition as "Crusaders." What a propaganda campaign President Bush is giving Al Qaeda! It costs Osama nothing but will bleed the U.S. treasury of up to 100 billion dollars. All the destruction of Iraqi cities and all the innocent people slaughtered will play day and night on the television in Muslim countries. Osama won't have to spend a penny to recruit new terrorists. Young Muslim men will flock to his cause. The President should care how a war with Iraq looks to the rest of the world. In many countries President Bush is feared more than the dictators that run Iraq, North Korea, and many other countries. These tyrants are ruthless, but they have little power to affect the world. President Bush, on the other hand, has control of the most devastating arsenal of weapons ever known. Moreover, President Bush can actually use these weapons, including weapons of mass destruction, to destroy any country he thinks is evil. And President Bush has clearly stated that he will do just that, even before the United States is attacked, if he thinks America is in danger. Osama bin Laden is winning, because the Bush administration is playing right into his hands. The American insistence that Iraq be disarmed, when Iraq is hardly in a position to be a real threat to other countries, looks like the propaganda it is. For President Bush, a war with Iraq is largely a domestic strategy to keep Americans from asking obvious questions about the loss of their personal liberties, the depressed economy, and the federal government's deficit spending. In addition, occupying Iraq would strengthen American interests in the Middle East. It won't be hard to convince Muslims that this war is not in their best interests. It's almost as though Bush is working for Osama! 11 February 2003 |
